Hutchinson Jewelers Glossary

Carat Weight  (ct.)
The carat weight is divided into 100 points.  100 points would mean 1 carat, or .50 would mean a half carat diamond.  Just because the carat weight of one diamond is more than another does not mean that it should be valued higher than another diamond.  This will be determined more by the combination of the 4 C’s.
Clarity
Diamond clarity refers to naturally occurring inclusions in the diamond.  The location and size of the inclusions will affect the cost.
Diamond Clarity Scale

Diamonds are rated on a GIA scale from “Flawless” (no inclusions visible to an expert under 10x) to “Imperfect 3” (inclusions just visible to the naked eye).  The AGS has a scale from 0 (flawless) to 10 (visible inclusions).

FL-IF Flawless diamonds no flaws visible under 10x magnification.  (rare)
VVS1-VVS2 Very small/slight inclusions very difficult to see under 10x magnification.
VS1-VS2 slight inclusions, difficult to see under 10x magnification.
SI1-SI2 Inclusions are easy to find under 10x magnification, but not likely seen with unaided eye.  (A very good value diamond)
I1-I2 Inclusions are clearly seen under 10x and are just visible to the naked eye.  (This is still an excellent diamond with great brilliance for the price)
Diamond Color Scale

Diamonds are rated on a scale from “Colorless” to “Light Yellow”.  The GIA scale is from the letters D (colorless) to Z (light yellow), and the AGS scale numbers 0-10 where a 0 is colorless and a 10 is light yellow.  Hutchinson Jewelers is only listing diamonds from the D-J range.

D-E-F Colorless
G-H-I-J Near Colorless
K-L-M Faint Yellow
N-O-P-Q-R Very Light Yellow
S-T-U-V-W-X-Y-Z Light Yellow
Diamond Cut
This characteristic determines diamond brilliance.  The range includes “Ideal Cut” to “Very good cut” to “good cut” to “fair cut” to “poor cut”.  Most of our diamonds are going to be “good cut” which represents the top ¼ of diamond quality.  These diamonds present a very good brilliance for the value.  As your budget increases consider upgrading to a “very good cut” or “ideal cut”.
Enhancements
This refers to any treatment or process other than cutting and polishing that improves the gemstone in regards to appearance, durability, and so on.
Estimated Ship Date
This refers to the date in which your products will leave our store or warehouse on their way to you.
Gemstone Clarity
This refers to the amount and size of the inclusions that would be visible to the naked eye, or to the eye at 10x magnification.  Our scale ranges from “minimal eye visible inclusions” to “eye clean” to “clean.”  Gemstones from Hutchinson Jewelers will be very clear with few visible inclusions.  Of course a perfectly clear gemstone would raise the price, but it is a combination of all the features that determine the price of the gemstone.
Gemstone Color
This is referring to the color range that is reflected from the gemstone.  Most gemstones found here will just have a “slight” variation of another color for instance a genuine peridot may be “slightly yellowish-green”
Gemstone Tone
Tone refers to the depth at which light is reflected from the gemstone.  The tone descriptions range from “light” to “dark” and most desirable stones fall within the “medium-light” to “medium-dark” range.
Ideal Cut
The Ideal Cut Diamond describes a round brilliant diamond that has been cut to exact and mathematically proven proportions.  Its symmetry, with 58 exactly placed facets, produces the ultimate in luster and beauty.
Inferior Cut
An Inferior Cut is when a diamond cut is either too deep, or too shallow.  A heavier diamond will result, but at a dramatic sacrifice of potential fire and brilliance.
Karat
A unit of measure for the fineness of gold, equal to 1/24 part. Pure gold is 24 karat; gold that is 50 percent pure is 12 karat. 14 karat gold is a more durable gold than 18 karat gold but is not as pure as 18 karat gold.
Luster
This is the quality of a pearl that describes its shine.  Usually salt-water pearls have more luster than fresh-water pearls and are therefore a little higher price.  Our pearls range from "medium luster" to "high luster" to "good luster" to "very good luster."
Pearl Clarity
Pearls have a variety of features and one is the spots and blemishes on the outside of the pearl which can affect its overall beauty.  Our pearls are going to range from "flawless" to "minor blemishes" to "minimal blemishes" to "irregular surface".  Pearls with "minor" or "minimal" blemishes may have a few tiny spots on them which is completely normal and will not decrease its overall beauty, while a "irregular surface" pearl may be used to create a natural effect to bring out its irregular features.
Pearl Color
Pearls may have a slight secondary color that appears as the light is reflected around the pearl.  This is completely normal adds to the overall beauty of the pearl.
Platinum
A heavy precious metallic element; gray-white and resistant to corroding; occurs in some nickel and copper ores and is also found native in some deposits [syn: Pt, atomic number 78]  Platinum is more durable than silver and gold which makes a more secure mounting for a stone than other metals.  This will explain why platinum mountings are more expensive than other mountings.  Source: WordNet ® 1.6, © 1997 Princeton University
Premium Cut
A Premium Cut diamond demonstrates subtle variations from the Ideal Cut.  Although dimensional differences affect a diamond’s reflection of light, a Premium Cut still achieves a harmonious balance between it’s proportions and the display of brilliance.
Push Backs
The design of an earring where you push a straight rod shaped piece of metal through your ear where a lock will slide over on the back side of your ear
Synthetic
The reproduction of natural gems, with essentially the same composition and structure as their natural counterparts.
